There is very possibility that your central heating system will develop a problem that will result in you having to drain it, in order to carry out a repair of some description. This can be carried out by you, however I would suggest that unless you are very confident and have done this before, you should really call a professional to come and do it for you like Enfield Plumbers. As stated, this may be a repair or it could even be that the system needs a good flush and clean through.

The Drain Cock:
A proven way of carrying this out is by using something called a drain cock. This valve takes the shape of a small angled piece of ribbed pipe that runs off the pipework on a radiator. This points down at an angle so that a hose can be connected. The pipe has a small brass tap with a square head that can be turned with a spanner. The metal is soft so it can deform if harshly treated, by constant opening and closing and is normally positioned on a radiator quite close to the front door.

Method:

Once you have located it, put a container or bowl capable of catching water under as when usually opened it will leak water onto your carpet. Connect a hose to the stubby pipe with a jubilee clip and run to an outside drain ideally. An Enfield Plumber EN2 can carry out this job. Remember the water will be dank and dirty, now, with a bleed key open the valve nice and slow allowing the water flow through the hose. Check for leaks.

If there is no leaking you can open the valve fully. Check at the radiators with a bleed key, the sound of air means the system is empty but if there is still water, then close the valves and wait until the system has drained completely.
